When you have surpassed the limits of your factory wastegate actuator, and boost control solenoid, then it may be time to upgrade to an external wastegate setup. You know when you watch those Youtube videos of those highly modified turbocharged cars, and they make that glorious screaming noise when the turbo spools? More than likely that is an external wastegate.
