Cold Air Intakes

One of the most popular modifications to your brand-new, or unmodified Subaru is adding a Cold Air Intake. From naturally aspirated engines, to especially turbocharged applications, the factory-issued intake box can be fairly restrictive because it’s universally compliant across all guidelines. Inside your intake box, you will find a common paper filter. Due to the heat cycles of the engine, inhaling small amounts of moisture, while collecting dirt, dust, and all the elements sucked in from the air box, these paper filters should be replaced every 6 months to a year. However, these filters can make it hard for your engine to breathe. 

This is why Cold Air Intake Systems can add substantial amounts of horsepower and torque. They allow your engine to breathe a substantially higher volume of air and do it more quickly. Many designs such as the COBB Tuning units, the GrimmSpeed examples, or the PERRIN Performance cold air intake systems will have an exposed cone-style filter outside of an airbox. Now these will typically have a heat shield that will allow the filter to breathe ambient-like temperatures, but you will see a drastic increase in the throttle response, and you will certainly feel the power gains.  

Although Cold Air Intake systems can be installed with your basic mechanical skill level, many vehicles will require a tune simply because your MAF won’t recognize this flood of extra air being force-fed into your engine. Because of these reasons, a Plug-and-Play Engine Management system such as the popular COBB Accessport will be required with available off-the-shelf maps to properly tune your vehicle to provide you with a smooth powerband.
