Its a direct fit and very easy to make work with your ride, if you just want it to drive while you save up for the rest of the mods all you need is a tune just don't expect any extra power with all stock gear. IMO, Just shell out the extra 400$ for a ball bearing model. The response difference is insane. The Quality of the parts and the turbo are EXCELLENT. Fantastic shipping, packaging, install, use. For an Outback XT I would not personally go with this turbo for street use unless its only city roads slower driving, It feels like an improper powerband for the fatty OB. You would think low end torque would be the way to go with such a big car, but even with tuning it leaves the top end feeling like an absolute slug. Went from beating mustang GT's and SRT's with a ball bearing AVO 440 (garrett gt2871r), to losing against Accords and Fiats with this turbo (TR TD05.18G mitsubishi) definitely more of a rallycross or time attack powerband although im fairly sure they both have a similar overall flow rate.
Alright so as you know the stock VF40 on a Subaru Legacy is one small turbo and takes its sweet time to build boost. This sweet snail from a rolling start makes 2 PSI of boost at 1500 RPM. That should give you an idea of how fast this thing spools up. I've been driving on this turbo for a while and it takes a little while to get used to how the throttle responds to input as the turbo hits harder than the factory one. I am a relatively light driver so I've been getting about the same fuel mileage as before . My car is also an automatic so your mileage and engine reliability may vary. CONS: YOU WILL NEED AN AFTER MARKET INTAKE, FUEL PUMP, INJECTORS, EXHAUST AND A TUNE OR THIS TURBO WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY. Those are the cons, this turbo needs quite a few other mods to work properly, trust me I went the cheep route and it didn't end well. You have been warned PROS: BOOOOOOOOOOST. Holy hell BOOST, this thing hits hard and hits fast. You will be blasting well past 60MPH/100KPH before you even know it. Out of the box this is one nice looking and feeling turbo. I would say the price is fair for a brand new turbo of this size and quality. Definitely better than risking your engine on an ebay turbo. NOTE: With the stock waste gate spring this turbo will push your engine to about 330 CRANK HP. Also if you plan to track your car or continuously drive you car hard get the cylinder 4 cooling mod.

Is this Turbo an upgrade over stock on a 12 WRX? Or is there an upgraded replacement turbo available that doesn’t need a tune?

A: This would be an upgrade over the stock turbo. Whenever swapping turbos, you would definitely want to tune for it.

Q: Wastegate Actuator spring weight Boby3 years ago
Is there a closer to stock wastegate actuator spring available? Or will the stock (vf52) wastegate actuator bolt up? I would like to keep a similar-to-stock boost control system and I am curious about the control authority possible with a 19psi wastegate spring when that is close to my target boost. (5280ft elevation)
