Description

Enhance your driving experience with the COBB Tuning Adjustable Short Throw Shifter. This short throw shifter has been designed to reduce your shifter throw and allows the user to adjust the shift throw distance and shift knob height once installed in the vehicle. This particular short throw shifter is adjustable throw wise, as well as height wise.  With the knob height, you can adjust it from 1” higher than stock, to 1“lower than stock. As far as the throw, expect from 10% longer, to 25% shorter after altering the trim ring.

The body of the shifter has been CNC machined from 6061 Aluminum, and it comes provided with steel socket head screws which are set in a counter bore for a flush mount which secures the upper and lower slider shafts in place. This will allow for easy independent adjustment of the shift knob height as well as the shifter throw length while being strong enough for those of you who shift with extreme prejudice.

This short throw shifter is compatible with factory shift knobs, as well as aftermarket shift knobs. Included in this shift kit are the shifter, side bushings, and shifter tool. Please note that the included bushings are for use on late model 2007 cars, and all 08+ STIs.

Longest isn't always the best

The install was strenuous at times but it's well worth it in the end. I had issues with the pin, cable, and the metal trim around the shifter. When removing the pin I just put a ziploc sandwich bag over the shifter, so when it falls, it falls into the bag. When trying to reinstall the cable, it took forever for me to figure out how to get the cable at the appropriate height (where everything lines up). I loosened up the bolt holding the front shifter bushing under the car and rotated the cable to get some extra cable up through the shifter. The trim was just difficult to cut because lack of tools. Other than those three things, the install is a breeze. The two way adjustable feature is brilliant, it allows the driver to adjust the shifter to their liking, whether it be for daily traffic commuting, comfort, racing, etc. This piece is also lighter than the stock shifter. This short throw shifter is amazing! Paired with the front and rear shifter bushings this piece is phenomenal. In conclusion well worth the buy. P.S. if you buy the kit you get like 6 COBB stickers :)

Short Shifter

The cobb short shifter has a nice look to it and it feels good when adjusted properly, although when it is adjusted to a low shifter height the shift cable will rub on the drive shaft and give a nasty buzzing sound. I fixed this with some zip ties from underneath the car. Id give the install a 7/10 for difficulty because of the pin for the reverse lockout and the requirement for going underneath the car to fix the buzz. WARNING: The part is made of aluminum and easily strips if any of the bolts are over tightened

Good buy

Total pain to install, but it's worth it if you're looking for a shorter throw. My car originally had the STI short throw installed, so I don't know that I really gained more than just the option of a shorter shifter handle. It's slightly shorter, but almost seems like the placebo effect. I came from the mustang world, so it does not reduce the throw near as much as a MGW shifter. I do recommend getting the Perrin or Beatrush reverse lockout while you're here though, saves you messing with that stupid cable more than once, seeing as how mine came apart twice in the first six months I had my car.

Almost perfect

I'll just get the bad out of the way first: As mentioned in other reviews, the reverse lockout mechanism can be sticky or (as in my case) actually impossible to install. The top half of the Cobb shifter has a thin plastic (appears to be delrin) sleeve pressed over the shaft to fight friction in the reverse lockout movement. On the one I received, that sleeve had been forced down WAY too far on the shaft to the point that it had started to buckle, increasing the diameter of the shaft beyond the diameter of the hole through the reverse lockout ring. Delrin is quite soft, so I was able to use a coarse buffing wheel to gently sand it down to flush with the rest of the shaft. The reverse lockout is still a little sticky, but I expect that to go away as the delrin wears in. Other than that, installation on my 2011 STi was quite simple and painless. The Cobb instructions include a few notes of things to be concerned about. Thoughts from my install: • I did not have to trim the metal plate around the housing at all. It wasn't even close to touching at any setting. • The shift boot does not pinch at all in any position. • The reverse lockout cable DID touch the axle when the the shifter was set VERY low. I backed it off until it cleared and that's where I left it. Shifts feel shorter, faster, cleaner, etc. Great buy. Definitely worth the minimal cost and install effort. Next up are these bushings just waiting to be installed...

Good Product

I installed this recently. Product feels very different from stock shifter, it is much more firm. This was a pain to install though. Took longer than I thought it would to get installed but that is because I lost the pin that holds the lockout cable in. Just saying please don't make the same mistake as me or else you will have a miserable time. Product itself however is very customizable to how you want your shifter to feel. Installed on 06 STi and everything fits and works well. Just what you would expect from Cobb.

  • Q: Will my shift knob fit this product?   2 years ago

    Answer

I have a Raceseng shift knob, I am using it on my 15 sti, will this shift knob fit on this short throw shifter?

    • A: If the thread pitch is the same as the OEM shift knob, it should be compatible. We can not guarantee fitment as we do not sell the Raceseng shift knob.

    Answer

What is the difference between the blue short shifter and the black short shifter kit? I was thinking that the black one is just the new version? if so any changes besides the color?

    • A: COBB revamped their product line and changed all their short shifters to the black coating. Blue is identical but is no longer available.

  • Q: will this fit a 2012 Subaru Outback 6MT  guest55c53c72caae52790b8faee8 3 years ago

    Answer

I have a 2012 Subaru Outback ^ speed manual transmission. I know the 2010-14 outbacks and legacies use the same transmission, as does the 2010-12 subaru legacy 2.5GT all use the same transmission. Do you know if this will work in any of those cars?

    • A: This would not work on those cars because those cars utilize a cable style shifter assembly where as the STi use a linkage style assembly.
