On this page, you are looking at the Mishimoto Aluminum Coolant Expansion Tank. This is a 100% aluminum unit that is TIG-welded, and it improves the underhood aesthetics especially when compared to the OEM unit. Here are the details:

  • Direct fitment for 02-07 WRX models and 04-16 STI models
  • 50% greater capacity than the stock plastic expansion tank
  • 100% aluminum fully-welded construction for maximum durability during repeated cold and hot transitions
  • Leak-free welded barb fittings
  • Fits with both stock and Mishimoto radiator caps
  • Polished aluminum finish

2nd replacement tank Cracked welds
D_Wrxs 3 months ago
I had purchased the Mishimoto expansion tank back in August and the weld cracked on me during winter so I had it replaced with the lifetime warranty and now since replacing it in back January 2 months ago the welds cracked again and is leaking at the same spot as the first one.. Idk what it is but it's getting really annoying having to keep replacing it even with lifetime warranty. I am really tired of smelling the burning coolant smell from my motor. So hopefully mishimoto steps their game up on these tanks..

Quality replacement expansion tank

Quality packaging. Top notch build quality. Spot on fitment. I mean spot on! Mishmoto expansion tank cap is easier to get on and off. Suggestion to future buyers. If your factory expansion tank hoses have a lot of miles on them like mine did, go ahead and replace them with new hoses and hose clamps you can tighten. The worn hoses and factory crimp clamps will leak from the expansion hose connection points under pressure. Not sure if this due to a reduced nipple size on the mishimoto tank or worn out hose and clamps from so man moto heat cycles.

Not all bad

Decided to pick this up for my 2002 wrx. The old expansion tank was a bit rusty, therefore I decided to buy this to replace it. The process should have been simple; literally remove three screws and the hoses and replace. However, like the others here I did run into some trouble. The first is that I am also running the cobb intake with the box. After installing the tank, it turns out the hoses are pretty cramped. It was pretty hard trying to plug the hoses back to the clips. I worry about the tight bend on the hoses, but so far so good. Another problem stemmed from the hose that connects to the bottom. After putting the clamp on and trying to install the tank, the hose was loo long, causing it to be hard to bolt on. In the end, I ended up having to cut a bit of the hose and there is still a slight kink, but so far no leaks. Other than those two problems, the tank looks pretty awesome. It does the job and stylized the engine bay as well. I sorta wished they also made a bracket so we could use the nut that held the stock tank on the bottom portion. I worry that with just the two bolts, it lifts the tank upwards a bit.

weld cracked and failed after brief use, was probably leaking out of the box as i have been smelling coolant burning the entire time. sure mishimoto will replace it forever but now theres corrosive coolant all over my otherwise pristine motor and nothings really going to fix that. stay away.

Good buy

Overall quality of product was excellent much bigger then on. Did run into issues with the line going from the block to expansion tank kinking but a little bit of trimming fixed that. I was mostly disappointed at the end when I couldn't shut the hood because the radiator cap was hitting the hood. I had to notch the under brace of the hood along with swapping to a smaller radiator cap. I believe I ran into this issue because of my intake manifold spacers.

  • Q: the mishimoto aluminum coolant expansion tank  MOMOTORSPORTS 7 months ago

    Answer

Hi, I am interested in buying this, but I have seen another version online for the same application but it features the bottom bracket, something that is missing from the pics that are featured here. It seems to be a revised version, is this the same offered at rally sport direct?

    • A: These photos on our site may be a bit outdated. We will get some new ones posted up, it should have the bottom bracket on this part. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

  • Q: Fitment  Yuri 2 years ago

    Answer

Will this tank create kinks or fitment issues with the Cobb airbox?

    • A: This has the same fitment as the oem one currently on your car. No issues should occur.

  • Q: Stock cap?  esnbrgr29541 2 years ago

    Answer

Recently bought this, fitment is great but prefer not to run a 1.3bar cap on both my radiator and expansion tank. Stock cap wont fit. Is there another option or cap that fits this tank that is 1.1bar rating?

    • A: Unfortunately Mishimoto only produces this cap in 1.3bar
