I installed this in addition to an OE transaxle mount, front urethane shift bushings, new OE shift u-joint, and a kartboy short shifter. At 22 years old I figured everything was due for replacement. Though it is hard to quantify the 'feel' of a shift it does feel more positive with the new bushings in my 98 Outback. I think the slop I have left is due to a 22 year old 200k transaxle. It really didn't make a world of difference but for the price and effort I am glad to have done it. It is worth noting that I now have a rattle/buzz at some RPMs and temperatures as the urethane bushings are much more stiff than the OE rubber ones. If a little noise will bother you I would go OE when replacing these bushings. Word for the wise: bolt this bushing on the unibody BEFORE you push the metal assembly into it. I installed the front bushings first and getting these bolts to feed took me 30 minutes of struggling. It is really a pain.
This is the second car I installed one of these into...and the last time I had to remove the shift lever from the car to slide the bushing on. Recently installed this onto my 2004 STi, (had the Kartboy pivot bushings already) and I was able to keep the shift lever on the car this time but removing the old one and wedging the Kartboy onto the lever still resulted in much cursing. Good news is with the rear stay bushing I get a satisfying notchy feeling when rowing through the gears.
I went on Nasioc and also watched a few videos on install as I’d never done it before and it looked like a pretty straight forward install and wouldn’t take me too long. There isn’t much room for install so I ended up removing the 6 bolts for the cross member to have a little extra space. I have smaller hands and was able to work around my DP, but I might recommend removing it for a little more ease of access. When installing the rear bushing I left the front one out as I did both at the same time, but I put the washer and nut on the front shifter link to keep it from moving around too much when trying to line up the rear bushing. This is where I ran into some trouble. I was only able to get one bolt in, until I grabbed a pry bar and pushed on the bushing to align up with the second bolt hole. Overall with my usual slow self it took me about 2 hours total in my driveway. As popular of a company as Kartboy is I was kind of disappointed with how the bushing doesn’t quite line up enough for ease of installation, but after install on my first shift I felt a drastic difference. Shifts are much crisper and I can feel my shifts as I’m making them. Overall would buy it again and I’m only knocking off 1 star due to installation.
definitely improved shift feel
A lot of instructions and forum posts say that the rear shifter bushing was difficult to install. It took me about 1.5 hours, extremely taking my time as I was giving the drivetrain a good inspection. So it wasn't really too difficult but it wasn't easy either. There isn't much room to play around with, so having the right tools really come in handy. A few tips on a 2002 WRX: - Leave the stock bushing bolted (after cracking them loose) while you free up the front shifter bushings. This makes it easier to pop out of the rear bushing. - Pop the end into the rear bushing first, before starting to thread the bolts in. - I found using 1/2 drive rachet/socket with a few extensions made doing the bolts up a whole lot easier. But make sure you don't over torque the bolts potentially stripping the threads. Shifter Feel: I already had pivot bushings and the front bushings installed for several years now. I bought this with the intent of completing the ensemble. To be honest, there wasn't that much difference in feel. The pivot bushings and front shifter bushings are probably the ones making the most difference. That being said, when comparing the stock rear bushing with the kartboy one, especially when the stock one has been on the car for > 15 years, it is definitely a good replacement, and the Kartboy ones are very solidly built.

Q: Stock short throw shifter Tcspicher9 years ago
I noticed that this product works in conjunction with the Kartboy Short Throw shifter. Does this still work with the STI short throw shifter that came stock on my car?

A: Unfortunate Kartboy does not sell us the hardware separate from the kit. I would say to contact Kartboy Directly to see if they would be able to sell you the hardware.

Q: bolts gkchan113169 years ago
Is it possible to get the bolts only? I already have another aftermarket rear shifter bushing with the OEM bolts. The OEM bolts are rusted and I would like to replace them.
