• Q: Complicated rad cap question  Kellen Morse6 months ago

  I have an 02 WRX with an upgraded rad, meaning as a 2002 model, it didn't come with a factory radiator overflow or cap. now it has a cap, but the overflow is welded shut manufacturers instructions for 2002 installs. I know using a 1.3 bar and a 1.1 bar cap together on the rad and overflow is ideal for proper functionality but I want to confirm if my radiator overflow is blocked and there's just a cap, where should I put the 1.1 and the 1.3 in that system for optimal functionality?

    A:  Your question is very confusing. What manufacturer instructions told you to weld your overflow cap shut? The factory overflow tank would be 1.1 bar. What did you upgrade the radiator to? Was this an upgrade kit? If the instructions told you to weld your overflow cap shut, it should also list what cap to use. If you welded your cap closed, there should only be one cap so why do you need two?

    A:  Just wanted to confirm my question because I cant reply to Lane H directly, and they seemed to have fundamentally misunderstood what I said. The 2002 WRX radiator from the factory doesn't have a cap or overflow port on the radiator itself. As a result, the Mishimoto rad I installed needed to have the overflow port, near the cap, closed, per Mishimoto's instructions. There is now a cap is on the radiator, but the overflow port that doesn't have anywhere to connect on the 2002 models, so it has been closed. I was curious what pressure cap would be ideal to run on the rad if it doesn't have an actual overflow port but I did the research required and came to the conclusion that it doesn't really matter if it has the overflow or not on the rad itself, the extra overflow on the rad just aids in bleeding. Higher pressure on the rad, lower pressure on the expansion tank, even if the rad doesn't have where to overflow when the spring pops. I have attached an image of the port that needs to be plugged on the 2002-2003 WRX installs.
