Features & Product Details

RallySport Direct proudly carries a great selection of quality aftermarket performance products brought to you by GrimmSpeed.

This is the GrimmSpeed Top Mount Intercooler Kit. Once you start performing modifications that add more horsepower and more boost, eventually you will surpass the limits in terms of the thermal capacity of your factory top mount intercooler. Heat soak will occur, and you will put a limit on your modifications and engine performance as a whole. GrimmSpeed's approach introduces a larger core that provides more area surface coverage to not only cool the intake charge temperatures but to keep them consistent under high-performance driving conditions where your engine will experience more heat. This is the perfect solution over the factory top mount intercooler unit for those looking to make more power and performance with better cooling efficiency.

    '12 WRX Hatchback - 300/301 FBO w/ GrimmSpeed TMIC 2 years ago

GrimmSpeed TMIC: 1 Ft. Throttle body coupler = lag-free boost with support upwards to 500 WHP, and a hell of a lot less piping to worry about leaking. I am on year 2 with my GrimmSpeed TMIC, and still have no regrets forking out the extra for a quality Top-mount upgrade. Paired with GrimmSpeed's Limited Divorced Downpipe, an Invidia N1 Dual-Exhaust Catback, and an AEM 340 LPH Fuel pump, I made a campy 300/301 on a heartbreaker Dyno. My only criticism with the upgrade setup is the same as most owners that have gone this route, the Silicone Coupler for the intercooler-to-throttle body (also known as the Cobra Pipe) is notorious for popping off at higher boost levels, something I've had happen a couple times on the road, I was lucky enough to have a couple tools on-hand when it happened but trying to re-connect a silicone hose at night on the side of the highway with the kind of clearance the EJ25's provide is not fun and you will wreck your hands trying to do it. That, and because of the larger size, there's not a lot of wiggle room when it comes to removing and reinstalling the intercooler so getting the hose reconnected anytime you've removed the whole thing is a pain as well. Personal recommendation, set the couplers Grimmspeed provides aside, they're fine for other applications but for the Cobra pipe it's not enough, and get T-bolt clamp that will fit on the Throttle-body end. Connect that part of the hose to the engine and get the T-bolt clamp as tight as you can, feel free to spray a bit of hair spray on the inner-part of the hose for that side if you're having an issue with it not staying on while it's being tightened down. You'll want to really make sure this part doesn't leak or come loose because it is by-far the worse of the two sides to have pop off, in fact in the future if you need to remove the intercooler plan on leaving this part of the pipe still connected at all times and shoving a clean rag into the other end to prevent debris from going into the pipe. Then connect the upper portion of the hose to the intercooler once you have the intercooler in place get the intercooler on the bolts that hold it in place, but only put the nut on a few spins so you can wiggle the intercooler a bit as-needed. Your best bet is to hit the upper portion of the hose with a heat gun on a lower setting for a little bit to make the silicone easier to coerce onto the intercooler, it will take some time the first time around but a little heat, a long flathead screwdriver and a lot of patience will eventually get the hose fully over the lip. Tighten down with another T-bolt clamp that will fit.

This thing is beefy! Much heavier than I thought it would be, and it definitely takes up a lot of space in the engine bay. I can no longer readily see my cool turbo heatshield, and my Perrin strut brace won't fit anymore, but those are small tradeoffs. Install was a lot more work compared to just messing with the stock intercooler. I also installed this with a good bit of supporting mods (recommend at least a boost controller, downpipe, and proper tune), and I've seen a massive power increase with no extra lag on my VF52 turbo. There will always be a debate about painted black VS unpainted; bottom line is you will not feel any measurable difference, so I just got the black to help prevent any oxidation that might occur on the exterior over time. It also looks cooler, in my opinion. Great product, insanely expensive, but very pleased overall.

    QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

    • Q: Fitment  StrawtHat_Subie1 year ago

Would the Crawford v3 air oil seperator interfere with the installation of the top mount? Or would the top mount fit with the AOS location?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  Crawford designed their v3 AOS specifically for compatibility with TMIC setups, so it should work with this one.

How comes it says it won’t fit my 09 Forester XT I’m pretty sure it will the WRX and XT have The same chassis and engine?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  Their 08-14 WRX or 05-09 LGT top mount intercoolers are made specifically for their listed vehicle fitment. It is possible to use their 08-14 WRX or 05-09 LGT top mount intercooler in a 2009 Forester XT, but *only *the intercooler itself will fit. The intercooler splitter will *not* work on the Forester XT.

what parts and specs do i need to run this intercooler ?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  This will work on an otherwise stock vehicle, although a vehicle with minor bolt on upgrades and a tune will see the most benefit from it.
