Description

mountune has been engineering exhaust systems for years with the objective towards increased power and response coupled with an enhanced exhaust tone and appearance. Their Focus ST High Flow Exhaust system is manufactured from 2.5” , AISI 304 Stainless Steel mandrel bent tubing with lazer cut flanges. All muffler assemblies are robotically TIG welded AISI 304 Stainless Steel for long life under extreme performance and feature consistent internal diameter throughout the entire length of the assembly. To ensure improved performance while controlling sound, each muffler includes a three- layer Hybrid Synthetic sound absorption packing that eliminates droning, booming, and other undesirable tones. Tubing diameter also has a major impact on sound quality and careful consideration was given to size and performance. We have also incorporated slip fit connections at various strategic points to allow for easy installation and adjustment.

I chose the Mountune despite it being less than 3" in diameter because I was worried about drone and I prefer welded on tips. However, with the "sound imposer" removed, this exhaust is barely louder than stock, even under strong boost. I also don't like that the long muffler requires discarding the center tunnel chassis brace. Installation isn't bad once you realize you must bend the aluminum heat shield where the pipe crosses over rear axle beam. That section of pipe will not fit otherwise, but you can bend the heat shield back into place afterwards. The final section of pipe does adjust the tip position, so you do have control of both how far they extend and how close they are to the lower valance. However, placement of the muffler forward shifts even more weight to the front wheels. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy the 3" Milltek system. I did not even consider systems that were not 304SS.

I forgot to mention two other items that may matter to some. The quality of the welds and polisheing of the pipe, muffler, and resonator is superb, no complaints there. However, the bolts that close the clamps are chrome-plated, not SS. The plating resulted in a less than ideal fit, and one of my clamps would not fully tighten. I was able to resolve it by retapping both the nut and the bolt on that clamp, but not everybody has a full tap and die set for metric fasteners. I feel these should have been SS fasteners, the chrome is sure to rust quickly under the car.
