I purchased these gears as a second option to another set I had picked out. The gears pictures on RSD's website are not what I recieved. I received the black and gold gears, not an issue as I feel the black and gold look better anyway. I installed these gears on my ej205 with crower 264 cams in my 2002 wrx. Gears were easy to install on camshafts but do require a degree wheel to properly set up. I have driven the car since installing these gears, made quite a noticeable difference my engine has been apart several times and the heads and block surfaced these gears allowed me to put the cams exactly and manufacturer spec

Be very careful when torquing the adjustment screws 5 years ago

Overall I was impressed with the quality of the part it self, but it failed me on the most important aspect. BC recoments 16ft-lbs as the torque value for the adjusent screws......at least 2 out of the 5 on each gear pulled the threads out at 10-12ft-lbs and one of them pulled the threads out of all 5 at a mear 8ft-lbs, half the recommended value...... Needless to say I had to helicoil all 20 holes. I was not impressed by this which is why I only gave it 3 stars for quality as the physical aspects of the part are still top notch, they just failed spectacularly in their only job. As a word of caution I would helicoil the threads right away. FYI these are indeed the current Gold and Black colour, not the old Gray and Black.

I've fitted these Bc cam gears to my wrx rally car and found the build quality quite good, easy installation fairly self explanatory, just make sure the adjustment nuts are tight before install. Micrometer type notches on the cam look great but don't seem to equate to degrees??? This makes decreeing them in a bit harder as you need a degree wheel to dial them in making the notches useless. Yet to race the car since install but I'm hoping those ARP studs do the job and don't slip.

    QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

    • Q: Cam sprocket spanner compatibility?  bram.biesiekierski614585 years ago

Hello. Are these cam sprockets compatible with the special spanners (like the Company23 tools) used to steady the cam while you undo the cam sprocket bolt? They dont look like they have any interface that matches? But they seam to have a symetrical 5 spoke design. Just wondering how they would go during subsequent engine teardowns???
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  They are not suitable for the spanned wrench but removal and installation are very easy with the BC gears. Personally, I do the final torque with the belt on which holds the gear in place.

A:  Thanks Jared. I am no too concerned with doing the fasteners up. I have done it as you say with the belt on before and never had issues. My concern is what happens when it comes time to pull the engine down in the future. I know for a fact that simply hoping that the belt has enough grip to undo the bolt after a few years of use doesnt always work. And i have seen friends break cam shaft thrust lands and chew bolts up in the past by trying to undo stuck fasteners. In these situations, the special spanners are invaluable.

    • Q: Fitting   kelvinleowkangwei6 years ago

Would these cam gears work with 280deg cosworth cams?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  These must be used with Brian Crower Camshafts when used on an STI and they will disable the AVCS system. They would likely work if you have a WRX.

    • Q: avcs or non avsc camshafts  meusebio2003641967 years ago

i have a 2004 STi and want to order the BC 280 cams. Do i order the non AVCS cams or do i still buy the AVCS cams. thank you
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  You would still order the AVCS cams and install the plugs in the front if the intake cams to block the oil flow to the gear.

    • Q: 2007 WRX?  Andrew Jarvie8 years ago

How can these not be suitable for the 2.5 WRX engine, but are fine for the 2.5 STI engine?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  These units will only work with Brian Crower's camshafts and unfortunately Brian Crower does not have any confirmed to fit the 2.5 WRXs. It is possible they may be able to fit but we do not have any confirmation of fitment from the manufacturer.

    • Q: cam sensor  c0urville8 years ago

I'm running an AEM ECU and have been having problems with the sync signal from the cam sensor dropping out. Would these cam gears help or hinder the cam sensor signal?
      • 0 of 0 people found the following answer helpful

A:  These cam gears should not have any effect on the cam sensor signal because the pick up points are the same as stock.
