RallySPort Direct proudly carries a great selection of quality performance upgrades by our friends over at GrimmSpeed.
This is GrimmSpeed's new CHASE JB400 Turbocharger. Designed by Chase Trogan who is a senior engineer at GrimmSpeed, this particular turbocharger is the result of over 3 years of testing and development. GrimmSpeed's goal was to provide a mid-sized turbocharger that offers many power benefits at a good price point. This turbocharger has a proprietary and state-of-the-art compressor, turbine, CHRA, and wheel design. These features have enabled GrimmSpeed to take full advantage of the physical limitations of the EJ's engine bay, and the design has endured tedious flow analysis, strenuous failure testing, and engine-pounding road and dyno testing.
The JB400 is the perfect addition to any Stage 3 car as the flow characteristics have been designed to pair well with the stock fuel system. The severe-duty journal bearing has been built to last, and even with minor upgrades, this turbocharger will substantially change the power characteristics and delivery of the EJ engine. This turbo quickly responds but delivers the punch from mid to the top-level RPM range. It will keep the power up between shifts while maintaining a flat power curve.

Put the turbo in, did my first tuning, and seemed great! This thing pulls hard. After 6,000 miles, noticed the boost was worse and worse, and eventually I wasn't making any. I checked the wastegate flapper, and it wasn't even touching the housing! Adjusted it, and had boost again, but spool was very lazy. After checking all connections, ensuring no exhaust leaks, I settled on removing the turbo for inspection. I found the wastegate flapper was warped, so only the upper edge of the door was contacting the housing. After contacting Grimmspeed, they warranty replaced the turbo. All good, so I thought. New turbo comes in, I place it on, take it for a test drive, have boost again like I am supposed to. Park it, notice an exhaust rattle. I check it out after it cooled down, nothing rattling outside. Think nothing of it, go take the car to the store... no boost. I do all my checks, and find the wastegate flapper AGAIN isn't contacting the housing. the rattling was the wastegate flapper door not contacting anything. I adjust, and again have lazy spool. This happened in 8 miles.. 8! on a conservative tune no less! I have never had a flapper warp, and I now have had 2 flappers warp! My only assumption is the materials the flapper is made from is weak, allowing it to warp under high temperatures. I can't keep replacing turbos under warranty, even if it's a lifetime. I may just buy a Blouch instead of chasing a warranty with Grimmspeed.
