Why is the Invidia N1 Cat-Back So Popular?

    16 OCT 2023

The VA STI is currently the last generation example that is available on the market. RallySport Direct was able to obtain an early acquisition where we had the opportunity to install, display, and experience some of the best upgrades in the Subaru aftermarket industry. 9 years ago, before we even completed the break-in miles in the engine, we knew what one of the first upgrades was going to get installed on this STI. Out of all the modifications and upgrades that were performed, there was one that really struck a chord with new owners at the time. Even with new VA STI owners of today, the Invidia N1 Cat-Back Exhaust System is one of the most highly chosen cat-back exhaust systems for the VA STI.

And after 9 years, (early models arrived in 10/2014) and after all the aftermarket cat-back options that are available, why the Invidia N1? Let’s discuss in detail what makes the N1 a great upgrade, and a performance investment for your 2015-2021 Subaru STI.

    THE QUALITY

Premium welds and strategic placement of the piping makes each fabricated example a direct bolt-on unit. The N1 will be a direct replacement for your OEM cat-back exhaust system, and the exhaust hangers will be welded onto the OEM locations for a great fitment where the exhaust tips will sit flush with the rear bumper. Each example arrives neatly packaged and includes hardware to makes this exhaust ready for the installation.

    THE MATERIALS

Like the majority of Invidia’s exhaust components, the N1 is manufactured using 304 stainless steel materials. Compared to mild steel, 304 stainless steel is required especially since your exhaust system is exposed to extreme elements. And if you live in an area that experiences frequent moisture, or the four seasons throughout the year, you will want quality craftsmanship to provide you with years of performance and reliability.

    THE FINISH

Although all cat-back systems will live beneath your vehicle and you can only see the exhaust tips and possibly a small section of the mufflers, Invidia still polishes the main piping. Unlike raw stainless steel, the polishing provides an extra layer of protection as it repels dirt and moisture a little better, and the efforts are certainly appreciated. You also have a variety of different exhaust tip options that will provide the rear of your vehicle with that aggressive after market look.

    THE PERFORMANCE

The N1 will have a 3-inch piping diameter throughout, this allows your exhaust gases to escape much more efficiently when compared to your OEM cat-back system. This will also reduce turbo lag as the less turbulence and restrictions you have, the faster your turbocharger can spool. The result will be an increase in more horsepower and more torque throughout the entire RPM band.

    THE SOUND

The Invidia N1 is versatile in terms of the overall exhaust note. At full throttle, it helps amplify that flagship EJ rumble with a race-inspired exhaust note. However, at idle just below 1K RPM, the N1 is not too loud or upsetting if you need to leave for work early in the morning. The example in the video includes a pair of built-in mufflers that exit a pair of 101mm burnt exhaust tips that help suppress the sound. Bottom line is that during acceleration it provides a satisfying exhaust note without attracting too much attention, it doesn’t produce much drone on the daily commute, and it is very tolerable at lower RPMs.

    VALUE

For the value, you get a quality cat-back exhaust system that contains all of the key elements when making a proper cat-back exhaust system. The main attraction is the sound, but you get the performance with the increased piping diameter and minimal bends. You get the weight savings when compared tyo the OEM exhaust system, and you get race-inspired styling with the larger tips exiting out of the rear bumper. The installation is straight-forward as it is a direct replacement and will include new gaskets and hardware to make for an excellent weekend upgrade. Suitable for those who have a dedicated race car, and an awesome modification for the enthusiast with a 2015-2021 Subaru STI.

Because of these reasons, the Invidia N1 for the 2015-2021 Subaru STI remains as one of the number one contenders for the top picked cat-back exhaust system. You get a lot for the performance, build quality, and sound. This exhaust system can be installed by properly securing your Subaru on jack stands or a ramp where you, and an extra set of hands can install this exhaust using basic garage tools. And when you’re ready for more performance, you can also upgrade your downpipe, as well as your up-pipe for more power.
