PERRIN PERFORMANCE SHIFTER STOP 2018-2022+ SUBARU WRX

PERRIN Performance are one of the top champions for the Subaru aftermarket performance industry. Their company’s purpose is to continue to innovate, fabricate, test, and put forth in production components that improve the performance, handling, aesthetics, and the overall driving experience of many Subaru models.

And with the release of the latest VB 2022+ Subaru WRX, you would think that after all this time, Subaru would get their shifter slop issues tightened up. On the other hand, Subaru may have thought, “let’s keep the aftermarket industry alive”. Since the VA chassis from 2015-2021, there has been an inherent yet notorious 1st and 2nd gear slop issues. And as Ernie mentions in the video, there hasn’t been much of a change to the transmission other than some minor gear ratio alterations. Now PERRIN Performance are one of the grandfathers in the Subaru performance industry, this means that they have state-of-the-art CNC machines, tooling, with careful manufacturing methods to provide enthusiasts with some of the best Subaru performance products available in the industry.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF HAVING A SLOPPY 1ST AND 2ND GEAR SHIFTING MECHANISM?

Money shifts. During those high-performance driving conditions whether it be at the drag strip, local autocross events, or at a sanctioned wheel-to-wheel event at your local track, everything is faster which also includes your shifting. What is a money shift? This is where you are shifting at the top of the RPMs in 1sr, then into 2nd, instead of going into 3rd, you go back into 1st. Your RPMs will instantly climb to the moon and more than likely you will experience heavy engine damage. You could also experience going from 1st to 4th, or 2nd into 5th. The PERRIN Performance Shifter Stop eliminates and excessive shifter movement between 1st and 2nd gear, to provide the driver with solid feedback, with a more positive shifter mechanism during all driving conditions.

    HOW PERRIN FIXES THE PROBLEM:

PERRIN solves this issue by creating a “shifter stop”. This is a 6061-T6 aluminum unit that reduces the horizontal movement down to 0.12”, and it bolts directly to the OEM shifter filling in that existing gap in the shifting assembly. Once installed, the shifting slop is noticeably reduced for a better overall shifter feel.

    SIMPLICITY OF THE INSTALLATION:

As you can see in the video, it is just a matter of accessing a pair of 10mm bolts once you have removed the shifter boot. These secure the OEM-installed 5th and 6th gear shifter stop / reverse lockout which is also adjustable. The PERRIN Shifter Stop installs on the opposite side of the 5th and 6th gear stop. It will include new provided bolts that are longer to secure the PERRIN unit, as well as the 5th and 6th gear shifter stop. The key point is to adjust both shifter stops so that you can get into all gears including reverse.

    PRICEPOINT:

This is one of the best modifications you can perform for under $50. Also, as you can see in the video, Ernie discovers that the factory short shifter option is over $600. And if your WRX is not equipped with the short shifter option, the PERRIN unit still makes a very noticeable difference. This can be installed by those with little mechanical know-how and can be installed very easily for those moderately experienced behind the wrench.

ADDITIONS: PERRIN SUPER SHIFTER STOP UPGRADE W/OE SHIFTER - 2015-2024 SUBAUR WRX

PERRIN does have an upgrade for their shifter stop, and for those of you with the OE shifter mechanism. These little pieces will bolt onto the PERRIN Super Shifter Stop and unlick the horizonal reduction that the PERRIN Shifter Stop provides, the Super Shifter Stop upgrade reduces the vertical movement. The result after the installation will go from 0.70”, down to 0.20”, and allows you to perform countless 3rd to 2nd gear changes without the risk of damaging the stop or the shifter.
