COLD AIR INTAKES
Make sure you keep an eye out for sales on cold air intake systems. Cold air intakes allow the engine to breathe in a larger volume of unrestricted air when it comes to your OEM intake box that has a paper filter in it. For turbocharged cars, it makes the turbo spool faster. And it also improves the throttle response on naturally aspirated cars. Just remember that depending on what intake setup you choose, you may need a tune because your MAF may not recognize the higher volume of air intake. PLUG AND PLAY ENGINE MANAGEMENT
One of the best inventions for the Subaru platform is the COBB Accessport. We highlight this particular unit because it was invented 20 years ago and was one of the first of its kind. Although these improve the performance, that is not the key attribute. When you add cold air intake systems, cat-back exhaust systems, or anything else that frees up more performance, naturally your engine will want to make more power, and more importantly, boost. The problem is that your ECU is tuned to control your boost control solenoid to a certain level. You boost cuts and fuel cuts in place and with mods, you will go beyond those parameters. The Accessport has many available downloadable off-the-shelf MAPS that can accommodate bigger injectors, more boost, different stages of modifications, and it has the ability to check engine codes, and measure performance data. A MUST-HAVE if you plan on doing any engine modifications to your Subaru.
