This tool locks the LH side cam sprockets from turning when the timing belt is removed preventing cam sprockets from spinning and eliminates potential valve damage.

Another big plus is this tool allows the timing belt job to be done by a single person with ease by locking the LH cams in place.

Perfect fit between the cams. The tool speeds up the timing belt process significantly compared to the c-clamp or block method. Great tool if you plan to work on several Subaru timing belt changes (yours, your neighbors, best friend ...etc) in a short amount of time.

One Mag nut did not play nice

One of the magnetic pieces did not want to play nice and did not fit without taking a file to it to shave of a very tiny amount of metal off it. I tried to get both to sit in either of the cams but while one fit perfectly the second one was not going in without actually trying to force it to. When I do another timing belt change I would buy a second one to hold the passenger side cams in place as well. I might have just gotten a bad mag nut or whatever you would call it but i'm not completely sure.

I misread the timing marks and the cams were in the wrong position when I took off the belt. However, the tool makes it easy to rotate the cam back to the correct position and lock them there. I can only imagine the frustration i would have had without this tool, and completely recommend it.

Alright, it was worth it after all.

This wasn't my fist timing belt by any means BUT it was my first dual over head cam interference motor. I was told I would be a wimp and didn't need this tool but i bought it anyways thinking it was better safe then sorry. As i was putting it on i was thinking to myself man, i can't believe i spent fifty bucks on this little piece of metal. But once I released that bottom tensioner I herd the slightest little 'tinck!' and couldn't have felt more comfortable! the rest of the job, especially putting the new belt on, I felt so comfortable and for no reason released to have it and I was glad i had purchased it. I was tempted to give this five stars, but even just writing about it I'm feeling better, so i guess it gets a fiver. Thanks RSD for getting it to me fast and reliably.

    Since there are 2 sides, would I need to purchase 2 of these? Or does it come with both?

    • A: This tool is for the LH side only (from driver's perspective). You can use this tool for both sides of the engine however, the right side cams are not under any valve spring load at TDC for cylinder #1 and will not move on their own like the left side will.

    Didn't see a specification, will this work with AVCS too?

    • A: This does work with engines that have no AVCS, Intake AVCS, and Dual AVCS. The included spacer is needed to manage the offset of the cam sprocket height on engines with Intake AVCS only. Hope that helps!

    Can I buy two and use them for both sides, or will it only fit for the left side? This would have been an awesome tool if I knew it existed when I did my timing belt, however even if you lock one side the other side can still move.

    • A: You can use this tool for both sides of the engine however, the right side cams are not under any valve spring load and will not move on their own like the left side will.

    So you dont need this tool for the left cams right ? if ive read right the passager cams can turn freely with no problems..? but different story for the driver side.?

    • A: The LH cams of the engine refers to the left side of the engine from the driver's perspective (or the right side if looking at the engine from the front of the car). Only the LH cams require this tool because when the engine is at TDC for cylinder #1, the cam lobe is compressing a valve spring and the cam will snap into a relaxed position when the belt is removed. This tool holds the LH cams in place so they can't rotate. The RH cams are not compressing a valve spring in this position and therefore do not need to be held with a tool.

    • A: The passenger side cams usually do not move when you remove the timing belt, but the driver side cams are under load and will jump when the timing belt is removed.

    This is for the USDM's driver side, right? The LH description is throwing me off from what I have been reading. Can you confirm?

    • A: This tool is for the USDM driver side cams.
